Bill Cosby Receives Marian Anderson Award

On April 7, 2010, Bill Cosby was honored with the Marian Anderson Award, which recognizes one’s efforts in humanitarian work.  The event took place at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia.

The 400-guest dinner featured performances by The Philadelphia Orchestra, opera singer Denyce Graves, jazz vocalist Lizz Wright, Boys II Men, and pianist Yang Bao.  Comedic relief was provided by David Brenner.  The closing ceremony performance was led by Bootsie Barnes and Tony Williams.

Philadelphia Mayor Nutter spoke of Cosby, “He’s a trailblazer who continues to speak the truth.  He’s also a tremendous ambassador for Philadelphia to the world.”

Bill Cosby, now 72, adds the Anderson to the many honors he has received over the years including Presidential Medal of Freedom, a Kennedy Center Honor, nine Grammys, four Emmys, and last October, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Cosby was the first African American to co-star in a TV series, I Spy.   His character, The Cosby Show’s Cliff Huxtable, was ranked No.1 for the 50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time by TV Guide.
